Citing the Cell Painting Gallery#
Cell Painting Gallery data licence and citation#
All the data in the Cell Painting Gallery is released with CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication. CC0 enables the data to be copied, modified, redistributed, combined with other datasets, and used for any purpose without requiring permission or tracking legal attribution obligations across datasets.
However, though the data is in the public domain, professional ethics requires citation. CC0 removes a legal requirement for attribution. It does not remove the scholarly responsibility to credit the people and institutions that generated, curated, and shared the data. This citation expectation does not add a legal restriction or modify the CC0 status of the data. However, appropriate citation is essential both to give contributors credit and to allow their institutions and funders to recognize the scientific impact of making these resources public.
When publicly reporting work that uses Cell Painting Gallery data, users are expected to:
identify each dataset by its CPG accession number
cite the dataset-specific publication or resource listed listed in the README for each dataset used
cite the Cell Painting Gallery publication (Weisbart et al., 2024)
acknowledge the Registry of Open Data (RODA) on AWS for their support in hosting the data

Example citations#
Example 1, all in text:
We used the dataset cpg0000 (Chandrasekaran et al., 2022), available from the Cell Painting Gallery (Weisbart et al., 2024) on the Registry of Open Data on AWS (https://registry.opendata.aws/cellpainting-gallery/).
Example 2, in text and acknowledgements:
In text:
Data was accessed from the Cell Painting Gallery (Weisbart et al., 2024). We analysed datasets cpg0000-jump-pilot (Chandrasekaran et al., 2022) and cpg0001-cellpainting-protocol (Cimini et al., 2022).
In acknowledgements:
We acknowledge the AWS Registry of Open Data (RODA) program for hosting the Cell Painting Gallery data.
